BY now the incredible hype about the “miracle benefits of Acai berries has, thankfully, pretty much run its course. But the hype didn’t cover up the fact that this little berry is, indeed, very nutritious.
Acai berries stem from a palm tree within the rainforests of Brazil. This tiny, dark, round fruit is about the size of a blueberry (with a good sized, inedible seed) and has a unique taste that has been described as a cross between a Cabernet wine and chocolate. Acai (pronounced ah-sigh-ee) is used mainly as juice in health drinks and smoothies or dried and combined with granola. It got the reputation of being a “superfood,” because it is abundant with anthocyanins (responsible for its royal purple color) and vital fatty acids, each considered to provide a good number of health advantages.
Regardless of any health claims, Acai juice is a tasty and fun ingredient in many smoothie recipes. This one uses the juice from Acai berries mixed with other berries to render a very tasty and refreshing drink.
