Fruit Fact: Blackberries are not true berries. Instead they are termed an “aggregate fruit”. Blackberries are also known as “brambles” or “caneberries”. There are more than 350 different varieties. But this is all beside the point. The poiont is that, whatever you call them, blackberries taste great in this blackberry banana smoothie !
This Blackberry Banana smoothie recipe also calls for Chia seed but with a bit of a twist: soak the Chia for about a half an hour prior to mixing in the smoothie. Chia is naturally “hydrophilic” which means that it absorbs many times its own weight in water. When soaked in water, the seeds form a gel that slows the digestion process so food nutrients are absorbed more completely and keeps you satisfied for a longer period of time. Of course, soaking the seed isn’t going to destroy and of the other good nutrition including important heart healthy omega-3 fatty acids.
In your favorite blender mix:
1 cup almond milk
1 cup blackberries (fresh or frozen)
1 frozen banana, peeled and sliced
1 Tbsp. Chia seed
Add all the ingredients to your blender and blend on high for 30 seconds or until smooth.
