Most of us need to reduce the amount of fat and sugar in our diets and a green smoothie is a healthy and tasty meal replacement.

Here is a wonderful example of how much nutrition a green smoothie can provide. A mix of carrots, tomatoes, celery and onion is easy to make and a delight to drink.

For even more nutrition, this recipe optionally includes Chia seed. Chia is a nutrient rich natural seed that brings a whole range of vitamins and minerals to your green smoothies including heart healthy, cholesterol fighting omega-3 fatty acids. Even better, Chia has no real taste of its own so adding it to the recipe won’t change the delicious results.

In your favorite blender mix:

1 medium or 2 small ripe tomatoes cut in chunks
Cup of carrot juice (or V8 if you don’t have carrot juice)
1 tablespoon of lemon juice (or lemon concentrate juice)
Two stalks of celery
2 scallion onions
A few sprigs of parsley if you have some in the refrigerator
2 or 3 sprigs of fresh mint (it adds wonderful flavor-and is very healthy too!)
1 tbsp of Chia seed

Blend until smooth. If your veggie smoothie is too thick, just add a little more juice. Also, if you like you can add a dash of Tabasco or even a touch of seasoned salt….just a touch, enough to add a little zing!

To me, you either love grapefruit or you don’t. Personally I have never met anyone who is just so-so about the fruit. But, even if you are not a fan, you have to admit that grapefruit is a great source of vitamin C, lycopene, and other nutrients. This grapefruit berry smoothie recipe uses both blueberries and strawberries as well as grapefruit juice. Even if you count yourself among those that aren’t usually grapefruit fans, you should give this mix a try.

In your favorite blender mix:

  • 1 1/2 cups pink grapefruit juice
  • 3/4 cup blueberries
  • 1/2 cup strawberries
  • 1 frozen banana, peeled and sliced (TIP: Peel and slice BEFORE FREEZING!)
  • Ice to taste

A green smoothie is a healthy and tasty to start off a day, or recharge in the afternoon. This green smoothie recipe has a lot of great stuff in it but features the tomato.

Here is more about the lovely tomato than you probably ever wanted to know!

Are you aware that tomatoes do not have to be a deeply red shade to be an outstanding resource for lycopene? Lycopene is a carotenoid pigment that’s always been associated with the strong red color of many tomatoes. A small preliminary study on healthy women and men showed that the lycopene contained in orange- and tangerine-colored tomatoes may actually be far better absorbed compared to the lycopene from red tomatoes. This is because the lycopene in deep crimson tomatoes is mainly trans-lycopene, while the lycopene in orange/tangerine tomatoes is generally tetra-cis-lycopene. In a very recent study, this tetra-cis kind of lycopene was shown to be more effectively absorbed by the study volunteers. Although a lot more study is needed in this area, it is appealing to find that tomatoes might not have to be deep red-colored in order for us to obtain excellent lycopene-related benefits.

Among those benefits are indications of a significant link between lycopene and strong bone health. While we don’t frequently think of antioxidants such a lycopene being important for a strong skeleton it is.

All this makes this green smoothie recipe a great way to do something good for your whole body.

In your favorite blender mix:

– 2 cups sliced tomatoes
– 1.2 cup cold tomato juice
– 1/4 cup cold apple juice
– 1/2 cup sliced carrots
– 1/4 cup chopped celery
– 2 cups of ice (or to taste)

To create your tasty green smoothie, cut up the tomatoes, carrots and celery as fine as you can for a smoother consistency, add everything to your smoothie blender and blend until smooth.

Greens, melons and berries all mixed together in a spinach melon smoothie are wonderful healthy and completely satisfying. This smoothie is really good in the warmer month when you are looking for something refreshing and filling too.

Its also easy to turn this delicious smoothie treat into a nutrition powerhouse just by adding a tablespoon of Chia seed. Chia is a natural seed that adds a large measure of nutrition including heart healthy, cholesterol fighting omega 3 fatty acids and antioxidants. Even better, unlike Flax, Chia doesn’t have a taste of its own so adding it here won’t change the delicious results.

In your favorite blender mix:

– 2 cups of melon chunks (cantaloupe, honeydew can be mixed together)
– 1 cup of frozen or fresh berries (raspberries, blueberries or blackberries, can be used individually or mixed together)
– 2 cups spinach
– 1/4 cup juice (your favorite-orange, cranberry, mango)
– 1 tbsp. Chia seed
