I must confess that I have something of a love – hate relationship with Pinterest. I really enjoy wandering around looking for stuff but I also get really annoyed at how many pins get shared so many times. Still, it was during my Pinterest explorations that I ran across this Vanilla Almond Smoothie recipe. It is finds like this that make it all worthwhile.

The recipe was put up by a Yuriel Kaim and is different from most smoothie recipes. This one is both vegan and is also gluten free. I haven’t had a chance to try it for myself yet but, judging from the ingredients list, it looks like a good bet to be really good.

I also learned something: I had never run across “MCT oil” before. It turns out that MCT stands for “medium chain triglycerides”. The benefits of MCT oil are reportedly being easier to digest and a good source of energy among others. Try this link for more info.

As for Yuriel, his Pinterest efforts can be found here and he also has a great looking website which can be found here.

His Vegan, Gluten free Vanilla Almond smoothie is:

2 avocados
1 cup cauliflower
2 tbsp almond butter
1 tbsp stevia
1 cup almond milk
1 t sp vanilla
1 scoop protein powder
1 tbsp Mct oil.

With a powerful enough blender add everything in at once and blend until smooth. If your blender is a bit under powered put the cauliflower in first and add the rest a bit at a time.

Healthy Banana Smoothie Recipe

Here is a healthy banana smoothie recipe to start the day. It almost guarantees no mid-morning slump.

Like everything in life bananas are a mix of good and not so good.
On the plus side:

  • Bananas are very low in saturated fats, sodium, and cholesterol.
  • Bananas are a great way to get dietary fiber, Vitamins C and B6, Potassium, and Manganese

Not so good:

  • Many of the calories in a banana come from sugars

Some avoid banana completely because of the sugars but I think that this is a case of the good outweighing the bad. While I wouldn’t want to build a meal plan around bananas, I see nothing harmful in enjoying them in a healthy banana smoothie recipe or any other smoothie recipe for that matter.

In your favorite blender mix:

  • 1 Banana, peeled and sliced
  • 1/2 cup milk (your choice, skim, low fat, 2%, etc.)
  • 1/2 cup Greek vanilla Yogurt (fat-free if you prefer)
  • 1 tbsp. Peanut Butter, creamy not chunky
  • 1 tsp. honey
  • 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract (cut this back if you are not much of a vanilla fan; as little as 1/4 tsp. works)
  • 1 tbsp. Chia Seed

To prepare, put everything into the blender at the same time and blend until smooth. If the mix is too thick it can be easily thinned with a bit more milk or a couple of ice cubes.

Here is Vanilla Malt Smoothie recipe that makes good use of malted milk powder. From Wikipedia: “Malted milk is a powdered gruel made from a mixture of malted barley, wheat flour, and whole milk, which is evaporated until it froms a powder”. So, there is a lot going on in every tablespoon. Also, bet you didn’t know it was originally developed as a nutritional supplement for babies. Wikipedia is amazing!

In your favorite blender mix:

  • 1 Tsp. Vanilla Extract
  • 1 Tbsp. Malted milk powder
  • 1 cup milk (your choice of type)
  • 1/2 cup Vanilla Greek Yogurt
  • 1 Tbsp. Chia seed
  • Ice to taste

I think one of the best things about smoothies in general is that kids love them because they look and taste so much like milk shakes. In fact smoothie recipes for kids are one of the best strategies for getting the little darlings to eat enough fruit and vegetables without the fuss.

And, some of the best smoothie recipes for kids in all of us recall treats we had years ago and this is a treasured memory. This vanilla and orange smoothie brings that sweet treat up to date in a healthy and delicious way.

Its also easy to turn this smoothie treat into a nutrition powerhouse just by adding a tablespoon of Chia seed. Chia is a natural seed that adds a large measure of nutrition including heart healthy, cholesterol fighting omega 3 fatty acids and antioxidants. Even better, unlike Flax, Chia doesn’t have a taste of its own so adding it here won’t change the delicious results.

In your favorite blender mix:

3 drops Orange Oil
6 ounces orange concentrate (Frozen)
1 cup vanilla soy milk
3/4 cup vanilla Greek yogurt
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 tablespoon honey
1 Tbsp. Chia seed
Ice to taste
