watermelon cantalouple smoothie

This recipe combines two favorite breakfast fruits into a single healthy and really tasty smoothie. In my opinion, this watermelon cantaloupe smoothie may be one of the most healthy around.

Everyone “knows” that “breakfast is the most important meal of the day” but do you know why?

In case you’re curious, here is an excerpt from a piece by John L. Ivy, PhD University of Texas at Austin:
…Breakfast is a critical meal because it influences practically every dimension of our being during the course of the day, including how we perform physically and mentally. Breakfast immediately raises the body’s energy level and restores the blood glucose level to normal after an overnight fast. It also raises the muscle and liver glycogen stores. Carbohydrate is the preferred fuel for muscle and the nervous system (2, 3). Low carbohydrate levels result in poor performance and rapid fatigue during training and other physical activities (4, 5). Perceived exertion is also elevated when blood glucose and muscle glycogen levels are low making exercise mentally challenging (5, 6). Therefore, starting a training session with low carbohydrate availability can significantly limit the quality of one’s training session and adversely impact training adaptation. A well-designed breakfast can provide an adequate amount of carbohydrate and other essential nutrients to raise the blood glucose levels and get a morning training session going with vigor and vitality, and without being overly filling.

Second, breakfast immediately lowers the blood level of the stress hormone cortisol, which peaks during the early morning hours (7, 8). We generally think of sleep as a non-stressful period. From a psychological viewpoint this is generally true. Physiologically, however, it is quite the opposite. Even though our metabolic needs decrease significantly while we are sleeping, the body still needs to maintain critical physiological and metabolic functions required to support life as well as those which foster daily recovery, tissue repair and growth and development – key components to training adaptation. The energy to support these functions come from blood glucose, liver glycogen and free fatty acids.”

Just in time for the hot summer months comes this very refreshing green lime & melon smoothie mix. It takes just a bit of effort to make it the right way and the results are completely worth it.

    In your favorite blender mix:

    • 1 medium green lime (the “right way” to make this is to grate about a half a tsp. of peel and 2 tbsp. of juice. If not using fresh limes, add 2 tbsp. of lime juice)
    • 2 cups sliced canteloupe
    • 1 Tbsp. honey (more if you have a sweet tooth)
    • 1 tbsp. Chia seed
    • Ice cubes to taste

Everything goes into the mixer at the same time. Blend until smooth and you’re done!

Pour into a chilled glass and enjoy!

A healthy melon smoothie is really easy to make and provides a very easy and tasty way to add fresh fruits to your daily meal plan. This melon smoothie recipe is a really good breakfast choice.

If you are focusing on adding nutrition to your diet (and many of us are), just add a tablespoon of Chia seed to the mix. Chia is a natural seed that brings a large measure of nutrition to the smoothie including heart healthy, cholesterol fighting omega 3 fatty acids and antioxidants. Even better, unlike Flax, Chia doesn’t have a noticeable taste of its own so adding it here won’t change the delicious results. You can order Chia seed directly from Amazon by clicking on the link in the recipe below.

    In your favorite blender mix:

    • 1 cup cantaloupe
    • 1 cup honeydew melon
    • 1 cup chilled V8 V Fusion Light Peach Mango juice
    • 1 Tbsp. Chia seed

HoneyDew Melon and Mixed Fruit Smoothie – Sweet!

“Honeydew melon” is a sweet name. I think its a much better name than “muskmelon” which sounds pretty terrible. But the honeydew melon is a member of the muskmelon family along with the Casaba melon and a few others.

The meat of a honeydew melon is sweet and juicy. So much so that is frequently served as a dessert. The melons are able to be grown in most climates. In the United States, honeydew melons are successfully grown as far north as Minnesota. Because they can be grown in such a wide area they are available all year, honeydew melons can be found in virtually every food market in the country.

Nutritionally, the honeydew is low in both calories and sodium and even lower in cholesterol and saturated fat. Like most fruits, they are a great source of vitamins including B6, A, and C.

In this smoothie recipe the honeydew melon is mixed with Peaches, Pineapple, and Oranges. It is an absolutely wonderful way to start the day and will provide enough energy to last the entire day.

As we often do, we have included a tablespoon of Chia seed as an optional ingredient. Chia has no taste of its own so, if you do choose to use it, it will not change the remarkable results of the recipe. And Chia will add a great deal of additional nutritional value including important heart healthy omega-3 fatty acids. Chia is found in all health food stores or at Amazon just by clickint the link.

    In you favorite blender mix

    • 1 cup sliced Honeydew Melon
    • 1 Orange, peeled and sliced
    • 1/2 Peach, sliced
    • 1/2 Cup Pineapple, sliced
    • 1 Tbsp. Chia seed (optional)
    • Ice to Taste
