If there were to be a contest for the worst sounding smoothie I think I would nominate this one. There is just something very off-putting about a banana spinach smoothie isn’t there?

But that was before I mustered up enough courage to actually give it a try. To say I was surprised understates it. I really liked it! So much so that I have now tried it twice, once with water and once with almond milk. Both tasted great and made me feel very virtuous for eating something so healthy.

Even better, the recipe could not be easier:

  • 4 cups raw baby spinach
  • 6-8 ounces vanilla yogurt (I haven’t tried it with Greek yogurt but it should be good)
  • 1 large banana, peeled and sliced
  • 8 oz. or so water, or Almond milk

All the ingredients go into your trusty blender and mix until smooth. You might want to try a bit less water or Almond milk to start and add more if the blend is too thick.

This made two really big smoothies so adjust if it’s just you for breakfast.

Tasty and Easy Quick Start Breakfast Smoothie

If you are like so many of us breakfast is a daily challenge. First are the time issues (who wants to get up early just to make something?), then there is the question of what you have in the house that’s actually breakfast worthy and, finally, there is the whole idea of actually making something, eating it, and then cleaning up all before leaving for work! Its enough to make you not want to do anything and many of us don’t.

Or worse, before you get to the office you wake up enough to realize that, yes, you are really hungry! So, of course, you detour to the nearest drive through or spend half a day’s wage on some designer coffee and an over-sized pastry.

Either way by the time lunch rolls around you are starving and cranky.

Wouldn’t it be nice to come up with something easy to make, healthy, and would keep you from snacking before lunch? Of course there is!

We present to you a quick start breakfast smoothie that’s quick, simple, healthy and will keep you well satisfied.

To get your day off to the right start, in your favorite blender mix:

  • 1 cup cold apple juice
  • 1 frozen banana, peeled and sliced (TIP: peel and slice BEFORE FREEZING!)
  • 1 cup rolled oats (If you ever wondered what “rolled oats” are this is what Wikipedia has to say: “Rolled oats are traditionally oat groats that have been de-husked, steamed and then rolled into flat flakes under heavy rollers before being stabilized by being lightly toasted.”)
  • 2 cups baby spinach, fresh
  • 2 Tbsp. Creamy Peanut butter
  • 1 tbsp. Chia Seed

Everything goes into the blender and gets mixed until smooth. If it ends up too thick, add a few ice cubes. Once it meets your requirements, pour into a to-go cup and you are out the door

Cucumber Spinach Smoothie:

Many try Kale in smoothies and find that the taste is too bold for their taste. For those, and everyone else, spinach is also a wonderful smoothie ingredient with a much milder taste. And this recipe even has cucumber!

This recipe takes a bit of time and has a bunch of ingredients but the payoff is the treat you get in the end. This recipe makes two healthy Cucumber Spinach smoothie!

In your favorite blender mix:

  • 1 cup skinned and sliced cucumber
  • 2 cups baby spinach
  • 2 previously frozen bananas (peel and slice BEFORE freezing!)
  • 2 cups sliced Pineapple
  • 1 cup filtered water
  • 1/2 cup Orange Juice
  • 1 Tbsp. Chia seed

Spinach Mango Smoothie:
This is decidedly a very “green” smoothie. There is a lot going on in this mix besides just the spinach and mango. You might have to do some shopping to make sure you have everything on hand, but the results are certainly worth the effort.

In your favorite blender mix:

  • 2 cups baby spinach (or kale if you prefer a stronger taste)
  • 2 medium sized frozen bananas (Tip: Peel and slice the bananas BEFORE freezing!)
  • 1 mango, de-seeded
  • 1 apple, cored (I used A Fiji apple but use your favorite)
  • 1 1/2 cups filtered cold water
  • 1 tsp. honey
  • 1 Tbsp. Chia seed
