If you are a regular visitor you will have noticed that many of the smoothie recipes at Best Fruit Smoothies include Chia seed as an option ingredient.
We have found Chia to be an excellent way to easily add more nutrition to a smoothie recipe. One of the reasons we are so high on Chia seed is because it has virtually no taste of its own and so can be successfully added to just about any recipe you can think of without modifying the taste. We add them to smoothies all the time! It is our way to get the best of all the vitamins, minerals and antioxidants
Over the last several years Chia seed has moved beyond the tacky “Chia Pets” advertised on TV and is quickly becoming recognized as a preferred source of both omega-3 and omega-6 cholesterol lowering fatty acids. We prefer it to flax seed as it does not need to be ground first to be used in our recipes.
In fact Chia seed has the highest concentration of omega-3 and in the right ratio to omega-6 (3:1) than any other botanical source. Chia is also rich in antioxidants and dietary fiber, both of which are great for human health.
Briefly, some other health benefits of Chia seed include:
Chia seed offers over 600 mg of calcium per 100 grams of seed which is about five times the amount found in whole milk.
Chia seed contains only about 19 mg of sodium per 100 grams of seed.
Chia is hydrophilic:
This means that Chia seed will absorb many times its own weight in water. This property prolongs hydration which helps the body regulate its absorbing of nutrients more efficiently. A neat side benefit is that this water absorption ability will leave you feeling “full” much longer.
Chia is a very good natural source of antioxidants which have been shown to promote overall good health and may also aid in preventing heart disease and some cancers.
Because of its high content of dietary (soluble) fiber Chia works very well as part of a natural detox program.
It is also worth saying that Chia seed has been certified as an organic raw food by the FDA and is among the best of the cholesterol lowering foods.
Every study we are aware of has the same conclusion that our diets are way too reliant on processed foods and contain far too little fruits, vegetables, and nutrients. Smoothies offer a unique way to add these ingredients to our meal plans in a flavorful and fun way and adding Chia seed just increases the health quotient of any recipes. And that is not a bad thing at all.
In the end as they saying goes, “you are what you eat”. Developing a healthier diet that relies more on fruit, vegetables, and other nutrients, and less on process foods is not only going to make us healthier it is also going to add healthy years onto our lives.
