The Concord grape has been around only for about 160 years courtesy of one Ephraim Wales Bull of Concord Massachusetts. One source I read claimed that he experimented with more than twenty thousand seedlings before getting a grape he was happy with. Soon after a Doctor Thomas Bramwell Welch came up with the first concord grape juice which he pasteurized to prevent fermentation. Dr. Welch’s first use of his new juice was for communion in his church.
Below is a Concord Grape smoothie recipe that uses some of Dr. Welch’s famous grape juice to great effect.
- 1/2 cup Welch’s Concord Grape Juice (any type will do but using Welch’s just seems right)
- 1/2 cup frozen blueberries
- 1/2 cup vanilla Greek yogurt (low fat if you prefer)
- 2 Tbsp. wheat germ
- Ice to taste
