Diet smoothie recipes are great but, sometimes, you might want a recipe that has a little more kick than normal. For those times, this Tabasco and Tomato smoothie it a perfect choice.

And, if you have a minute, here is some things about Tabasco sauce you might not be aware of.

Tabasco is probably the best known of all hot sauces. It was created by one Edmund Mclhenny in 1868 and the Mclhenny Company is now headed by Paul C.P. Mclhenny, the sixth of the family to run the company.

Tabasco sauce is created from tabasco peppers, salt, and vinegar. Much like wine, this tasty hot sauce is aged in oak barrels for three years before bottling.

How hot is Tabasco? It turns out that there is a “spicy heat” measurement scale called the Scoville scale which measures the number of “Scoville heat units” (SHU) based on the amount of capsaicin in the pepper. You can read more about the Scoville scale here. For our purposes here, Tabasco measures between 2,500 and 5,000 SHU. For comparison, habanero sauce is more than twice as hot, measuring between 7,000 and 12,000 SHU.

Regardless, tabasco is hot and it is an important ingredient in this smoothie recipe.

In your favorite blender mix:

  • 3/4 cup tomatoe juice
  • 2 cups fresh tomatoes, chopped
  • Tabasco or other hot sauce to taste (add a bit at a time!)
  • 1/4 cup chopped celery
  • 1/2 cup chopped carrots
  • 1/4 cup apple juice
  • Ice to taste
