Here is an Orange and Lime smoothie to add to your collection of healthy breakfast smoothies. This recipe uses two fruits not usually associated with each other to provide a real morning wake up call!
The Orange is certainly one of the world’s favorite fruits. And it has been with us for thousands of years. As long ago as the Persian empire (about 550 to 330 B.C.) there is a written record of a fruit called “narang”.
Limes are best known as a flavoring in a lot of foods and beverages. Limes were used by the British navy to prevent scurvy, issuing each sailor a daily ration of citrus. Limes were favored over Lemons because they were easier to obtain in the overseas colonies.
Together, with a few other ingredients, the Orange Lime mix in this healthy breakfast smoothies recipe works very well not simply as a breakfast meal, but as a mid day energy snack as well.
The Chia seed is optional but, should you include it, you will be including a whole range of additional nutritional value including heart healthy omega-3 fatty acids. Chia doesn’t have a taste of its own so adding it to the recipe will not change the results
Healthy Breakfast Smoothies Recipe:
Begin by peeling a lemon lime and an orange and then in your smoothie blender mix:
– 1 orange, seeded and cut in chunks
– 1/2 each Lime and Lemon both peeled and sliced
– 1 frozen banana, peeled and sliced
– 1 to 1 1/2 cups of spinach (kale will work too)
– 1 tbsp. Chia seed
– Ice to taste
How “juicy” the citrus is will be the key to how much ice you will need to thin out the mix. Or, if you prefer, you can add less ice and include 1/4 to 1/2 cup of lemonade or orange juice. That is the beauty of smoothies, there are no hard and fast rules. Whatever tastes best to you is fine!
