We all want to consume more healthy food in our diet and smoothies are a good choice. Here we have a pretty different recipe using both lime juice and basil.

When you use basil it is probably in one Italian or Asian dish or another and not in any type of cold drink. But stands to reason that basil will work in some smoothie recipes because the flavor is so quickly destroyed by heat (which is why food recipes usually call for it to be added toward the end of the process). Basil is also a pretty nutritious herb. It will provide vitamins C, E, and K as well as other good nutrition such as Calcium, Iron, beta-carotene and dietary fiber.

Add even more nutrition to the recipe just by adding a tablespoon of Chia seed. Chia is a natural seed that adds a large measure of nutrition including heart healthy, cholesterol fighting omega 3 fatty acids and antioxidants. Even better, unlike Flax, Chia doesn’t have a noticeable taste of its own so adding it here won’t change the delicious results. In your favorite blender mix:

  • 2 tbsp basil (fresh and chopped)
  • 1/3 cup lime juice
  • 3 tsp. lime zest
  • 1/2 cup vanilla Greek Yogurt
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 cups lime sherbet or lemon sorbet
  • 1 tbsp. Chia seed
