Thanks to Starbucks and other chains coffee has become much more than a morning beverage. Many drink coffee at one temperature or another throughout the day. An iced coffee smoothie takes advantage of that desire for coffee taste in yet another form. There are a number of iced coffee smoothies but many dilute the coffee taste with a rash of other ingredients. This recipe is very different as it puts the spotlight directly on the coffee itself.
Although this recipe calls for cooled brewed coffee, if you are pressed for time, or don’t have any brewed coffee, feel free to use a tablespoon of instant coffee instead.
Its also easy to turn this iced coffee smoothie treat into a nutrition powerhouse just by adding a tablespoon of Chia seed. Chia is a natural seed that adds a large measure of nutrition including heart healthy, cholesterol fighting omega 3 fatty acids and antioxidants. Even better, unlike Flax, Chia doesn’t have a noticeable taste of its own so adding it here won’t change the delicious results.
In your favorite blender mix:
- 3/4 cup cooled brewed coffee (or a tablespoon of instant coffee
- 1 cup milk (low fat, 2%, your choice)
- 1 tbsp. flavored coffee creamer (optional)
- Ice to taste
- 1 Tbsp. Chia seed
