The word “Pomegranate” is a compound derivate of the Latin words “pomum”, meaning apple and “granatus” meaning seeded. They are a delicious large, deep-red, thin-skinned, delicious fall and winter fruit growing in popularity especially in the Pomegranate Smoothie.

Pomegranates can be split open and the fruit eaten right from the individual pods as a delicious treat, or used in salad, or even as a garnish. But pomegranates are most popular and refreshing when they are juiced. The juice has a unique sweet-tart flavor and is used to make sauces, flavor recipes, as well as added to some alcoholic drinks like martinis and made into wine. Pomegranates are also an excellent foundation for delicious and healthy smoothies’ recipes.

Pomegranates are low in calories, and high in potassium and Vitamin C. If you are starting a detox diet plan, you already know that fruits play an important part. But did you know that some practitioners recommend drinking fresh pomegranate juice daily? This is because the pomegranate is actually one of the most powerful antioxidants we know of in any food and is also identified as a source to reverse and even may help prevent some cancers and heart disease.

While you can certainly enjoy eating the fruit pods one at a time, combining the pomegranate with other fruits creates fruit smoothies that have a refreshingly tart taste and are perfect for an afternoon pickup or even as a desert! Try one of these smoothie recipes-made with fresh pomegranate seeds or some quick easy smoothies that are made with pomegranate juice! Filling and delicious!

Pomegranate Smoothie with banana

  • 1 cup of plain or vanilla low-fat yogurt
  • 1 cup of chilled pomegranate juice
  • 1 frozen banana, peeled and sliced (TIP: peel and slice the banana BEFORE freezing)

This is a quick mix! Just combine the ingredients in your blender and mix until creamy. Pour into a chilled glass and serve. It is fast, refreshing and oh so healthy! If you are using this smoothie as part of a detox diet plan or weight control program try adding a tbsp of Chia seed to really boost your intake of vitamins and minerals. Chia is a natural food source rich with Omega 3’s and, when added together with pomegranate juice, you can’t have a more delicious or healthy mid-morning meal!

Pomegranate Smoothie with Blueberry

You will need to peel and remove the seeds from one large pomegranate before starting.

The seeds of one (1) large pomegranate (Natural anti-oxidants)

– 2 medium bananas, cut in chunks
– 1/4 cup of blueberries (High in Vitamins C and E)
– 3/4-1 cup of milk (soy, 2% or whole milk)
– 1 Tablespoon honey


Mix the ingredients together, blending until smooth. Start with only 3/4 cup of milk and add more if you want (or need) to. The consistency might only need 3/4 cup of milk if you use frozen blueberries, however if you use fresh, you might find 1 cup of soy milk to make the consistency you like.
