A few years ago there was a flurry of rumors that Lemons were a sure fire antidote to “cancers of all types” and that Lemon is “10,000 time stronger than Chemotherapy”. Since these claims don’t pass even the most generous tests (people have been eating Lemons for thousands of years and yet cancer is still with us), they quickly went away. But, it turns out that there is a bit of truth here.
Several studies have focused on a citrus compound known as limonoids which are present in all citrus fruit as having significant benefits on human health, including fighting cancer. One study from 2011 detailed that liminoids found in White Marsh grapefruit delayed growth of colon cancer cells and also played a significant role in their destruction as well. And other study in 2010 related limonoids to benefiting breast cancer. It is important to note that these are both very early studies and should not be taken as medical advice but they do show that citrus fruits should play an important part in our meal planning
To make that planning easier, here is a really simple lemon citrus smoothie recipe that works as either a mid day break or a breakfast on its own. It also features Chia seed as an optional ingredient. If you do choose to include Chia, you will be adding even more nutritional value including important heart healthy omega-3 fatty acids. Chia has no taste of its own so adding it won’t change the refreshing taste of this recipe!
-1 6 ounce container of low-fat lemon yogurt
-1 seedless orange cut in sections
-1 tsp. Chia seed
