kale apple smoothie

Despite all the health benefits of kale many just can’t come to enjoy the taste. I myself have also had to force down smoothies with either too much kale or too little other ingredients from time to time. But this kale apple smoothie includes just enough fruit to take the edge off the kale and create a fully satisfying smoothie experience.

Try it for yourself and see if you don’t agree!

  • 3/4 cup chopped kale. TIP: remove the stems and ribs for a smoothie drink
  • 1 celery stock. The one we used wasn’t huge and we chopped it up to lessen the load on the blender
  • Half a good sized frozen banana, peeled and sliced. TIP: Peel and slice BEFORE FREEZING!
  • Half a cup apple juice
  • 1 tbsp. lemon juice
  • Ice to taste. If the banana isn’t frozen you will probably want more ice

Everything goes into your blender at the same time. Mix until smooth and enjoy!

apple pear smoothie

Living where we do, we are fortunate that we have a wide selection of food stores to choose from. Within 5 miles of the house, we have 4 supermarkets (Publix, Safeway, Whole Foods, and Fresh Market), and 3 fresh produce stands that are open daily plus 1 that shows up in a parking lot on most Sunday mornings.

In short we have the luxury of picking and choosing our fresh produce all year round.

I bring this up because this apple pear smoothie recipe got me thinking about how we bought apples at one produce stand and pears at one of the supermarkets. Only the apples were on the original list but the pears looked so good they had to come home as well.

Anyway, that’s the story of how this post got started. I hope you enjoy it.

In your favorite blender mix:

  • 1 Apple seeded/cored and cut in chunks
  • Whole Pear seeded/cored and cut in chunks (I used a Bartlett)
  • Full Cup cold apple juice
  • Optional but good: -1 tbsp.chia seed

If you blender is strong enough, put everything in at once. If not, feed it the apples first, then the pears.

ABS Smoothie

After deciding on “ABS Smoothie” for this post I went looking for other things known by this 3 letter acronym.

Being a guy, my first thought was Anti-lock Braking System followed by American Bureau of Shipping. After those two I was done and went looking.

It turns out that there are 137 different entries for ABS and, if you are at all interested, they can be found here.

With this delicious Apple Banana Strawberry (ABS) smoothie there are now 138!

In your favorite blender mix:

  • 1 green apple, quartered and cored
  • 1 red apple, quartered and cored
  • 2 frozen bananas, peeled and sliced (TIP: peel and slice BEFORE FREEZING)
  • 10-12 fresh or frozen strawberries
  • 1-2 cups apple juice

If your blender isn’t the strongest, its not a bad idea to chop the apples into small pieces to reduce the strain on both the motor and the blades.

If you don’t use frozen bananas and/or frozen strawberries, you might want to add ice cubes to the mix for a colder drink.

mixed apple smoothie

A different sort of apple smoothie celebrating fresh apples mixed with bananas and strawberries to create a wonderful mixed apple smoothie treat for 2 or 3 people.

Its also easy to turn this mixed apple smoothie treat into a nutrition powerhouse just by adding a tablespoon of Chia seed. Chia is a natural seed that adds a large measure of nutrition including heart healthy, cholesterol fighting omega 3 fatty acids and antioxidants. Even better, unlike Flax, Chia doesn’t have a taste of its own so adding it here won’t change the delicious results.

In your favorite blender mix:

  • 1 large granny smith green apple, peeled and cut in chunks
  • 1 red delicious apple, peeled and cut in chunks
  • 1 cup fresh or frozen strawberries (about a dozen)
  • 1 1/2 to 2 cups cold apple juice
  • 1 tablespoon Chia seed
  • 2 frozen bananas (TIP: peel and slice BEFORE freezing!)

Everything in the blender at once and mix until it reaches the desired consistency. If you need to thin the mix, add some more apple juice.
