detox smoothies

After all this time, what do we know about detox in general and detox smoothies in particular? In the broadest sense, “detox” is an alternative medicinal practice that has been made very popular by hundreds of products that make the claim they remove “toxins” from the body. That’s fine but what, exactly, are “toxins”?

A good definition of the word is the one put forth by Medline Plus: “Toxins are substances create by plants and animals that are poisonous to humans. Toxins also include medications that are helpful in small doses but poisonous when used in large amounts.” Follow the link if you want to read more.

The products offered around the web and in stores generally focus on “cleansing” the digestive tract because our modern lifestyle and poor diet causes concentrations of toxins that cannot otherwise be removed. This, of course, is nuts.

Our bodies are the result of many thousands of years of evolution. Over the millennia, theĀ  human body has survived global warming, global cooling, poor diet, and countless other challenges. Obviously, the body learned how to cleanse itself long ago without the need of special products.

So what about “detox smoothies”? This is a good question. I think these are in a different category because they are first a smoothie and a detox smoothie only because of their ingredients. And that is the case with this smoothie recipe. At it’s heart it is a mixed fruit smoothie recipe. But, by adding some lemon juice to stimulate digestion it turns into a detox smoothie. Regardless if this is among the detox smoothies or simply a tasty, healthy drink, it is a recipe you should try.

In your favorite blender mix:

– 1 1/2 cup mixed berries (raspberries, blueberries, etc.)
– 1 cup milk (rice, almond, soy, your choice)
– 2 Tbsp. Honey
– 1 Tbsp. Chia seed
– 2 Tsp. lemon juice
– 2 tsp. grated ginger

apple banana smoothie

The apple banana smoothie is just sweet just the way it is but can be made even sweeter by adding some ingredients such as honey.

Our friend the apple is a favorite ingredient in many healthy smoothies and with good reason. As a food, the apple has only 65 calories per half cup and just two of those are from fat. The apple has very little saturated fat, sodium, or cholesterol and delivers large amounts of vitamin C, a little bit of vitamin A, and a lot of dietary fiber. As he saying goes “an apple a day keeps the doctor away”. This recipe is a good way to test that!

In your favorite smoothie blender mix the following:

  • One previously frozen banana peeled and sliced (TIP: peel and slice BEFORE FREEZING)
  • An apple
  • Half a cup fat free milk
  • A cup of orange juice
  • (Optional)1 tsp. honey

Everything goes into the blender at the same time and gets mixed until smooth.
