strawberry smoothie

Spring explodes with fresh fruit and one of our absolute favorites are strawberries. So much so that frequently we buy more than we can use. To prevent them from going bad I freeze them. I just nip the tops, wash and put them in zip lock bags with about 1 cup in each bag. When next needed I pull a bag out of the freezer and treat myself to springtime fruits! We have successfully kept some frozen for several months so storage isn’t a real problem.

Looking for even more nutritional firepower? You can turn this strawberry smoothie into a nutritional powerhouse just by adding a tablespoon of Chia seed. Chia has advantages over other more well known nutritional supplements such as flax seed or whey. Chia seeds are a superb natural source of vitamins, minerals, and important heart healthy omega-3 fatty acids that help fight cholesterol. Even better Chia, unlike Flax seeds, has no real taste of its own. This means adding Chia won’t get in the way of the strawberry smoothie goodness.

This smoothie is very simple and easy to make:

In your favorite blender mix:

1 cup Strawberries, fresh in spring and summer, frozen in fall and winter
1 carton of low-fat Greek yogurt yogurt (vanilla or strawberry)
Tbs.Chia seed

All ingredients go into your blender and get mixed until smooth. Drink and enjoy!

And, isn’t this the best picture of a strawberry you’ve ever seen?

strawberry banana smoothie recipe

A Strawberry Banana smoothie recipe is an all time favorite and is a great breakfast smoothie for two, especially if you are in a hurry in the mornings (and who isn’t?).

There are countless takes on how to build a strawberry banana smoothie. The reason we like this recipe is that it includes yogurt which gives the mix a bit more body.

Its also easy to turn this strawberry banana smoothie treat into a nutrition powerhouse by adding a tablespoon of Chia seed. Chia is a natural seed that adds a large measure of nutrition including heart healthy, cholesterol fighting omega 3 fatty acids and antioxidants. Even better, unlike Flax seeds, Chia doesn’t have a noticeable taste of its own so adding it here won’t change the delicious Strawberry Banana results.

In your favorite blender mix:

  • -3 cups of frozen strawberries
  • -2 cups of low-fat milk (Soy, or vanilla-flavored soy is ok too)
  • -1 large frozen banana, peeled and sliced (TIP: peel and slice BEFORE FREEZING)
  • -1 cup of low-fat yogurt (plain, vanilla or strawberry)

Put everything into your smoothie blender at the same time and mix until smooth. Then enjoy!

Fun Fruit Fact: Tangerines are really a variety of the Mandarin orange. They are smaller, not as sour and are easier to deal with in terms of peeling and preparing.  Tangerines are full of vitamin-C and beta-carotene. In this recipe they are an added treat in a not so traditional fruit juice smoothie recipe

Add even more healthy nutrition by including a tablespoon of Chia seed to the mix. Chia seed is a nutritional powerhouse and loaded with heart healthy, cholesterol fighting omega-3 fatty acids. Chia is a better addition than Flax because it has no taste of its own and won’t change the berry and tangerine goodness at all.

In your favorite blender mix:

– Cup of cold OceanSpray® Cranberry Tangerine Juice
– 1/2 cup of frozen raspberries
– 1/4 cup of frozen strawberries
– 1 Tbs.Chia seed (optional)

Mix completely and top with a fresh section of tangerine, orange or big fat strawberry

According to Wikipedia, a “berry” is a “fleshy fruit produced from a single ovary… The berry is the common type of fleshy fruit…”. And they are the focus of this berry smoothie recipe.

As we have it here, this recipe makes use of a little bit of three different berries, The beauty of smoothie recipes is you can fiddle with them without ruining anything. So, if you are partial to blueberries over strawberries feel free to make that change. Or, if you want, add grapes to the mix as well. It’s really up to you!

In your favorite blender mix:

  • 1/4 cup blueberries
  • quarter cup strawberries
  • quarter cup raspberries
  • 1 cup cold Orange juice (Fresh is best, otherwise watch the sugar)
  • Tbs. honey
  • 1 Tbs. Chia seed

Next mix in the blender until it is your favorite consistency!  If you use frozen fruits you won’t need to add ice, but if you are using fresh fruits you might need to add some ice to blend your smoothie to a smoother texture.
