Here are a few of the reasons as described by USDA:
* Fruit is naturally rich in potassium, dietary fiber, vitamin C, and folic acid.
* Diets with food containing dietary fiber may well reduce the risk of coronary heart disease.
* Other suspected benefits derived from eating fruits include:
-Reduced risk for stroke
-Reduced risk for type 2 diabetes
-Reduced risk for certain cancers including mouth, stomach and colon-rectal
-Reduced risk of kidney stones

To get the most benefits out of the fruit you add to your diet, consider these tips:

* Choose whole or pre-cut fruit instead of juice to retain the benefits of dietary fiber
* Put fruits high in potassium high on your list. These include bananas, honeydew melons, orange juice and prunes
* If you are using canned fruit use the fruits canned with 100% fruit juice or water and not syrup.
* Mix up your choices. Different fruits have different nutrient contents and you will not get bored!

Traditionally, most fruit is eaten at breakfast which puts all that good nutrition into you body at the beginning of the day. Most top cereal with bananas or strawberries and drink a glass of orange or grapefruit juice.

There is not a thing wrong with this approach because some fruit is certainly better than no fruit at all.

Have you heard the expression “we are what we eat”? Well, if you haven’t, it is very much true. What we put into the engines we call our bodies in very large part defines what type of engine we are. So, if this is true, why don’t we all just eat what is healthy and provides the different nutrients we need? And, even more importantly–how do we make sure our kids get the vitamins and minerals they need with natural foods. Well, smoothies can help. Hence the title of this post: “Kids Plus Smoothies”.

For example, by now we should all agree that our overall health is very much improved when we eat 5 servings of fruit and vegetables daily. Yes many, many of us do not even come close to that amount. Why is that?

Well, there are different reasons but the most frequently heard are:

– The fruits and/or vegetables are not in season
– With all the peeling and cutting, they are just too hard to prepare
– It is a challenge to work them into the family meals because the kids just won’t eat fruit or vegetables

Pardon me for saying so, but these, and many more, are just excuses and not valid reasons not to eat healthier.

Walk into virtually any supermarket and you will find a spectacular assortment of fresh fruit and vegetables at any time of the year. And the frozen section has an even larger selection of frozen fruit and vegetables. You can even get fruit and vegetable from either frozen or bottled juices. Really, there’s no excuse not to eat healthy.

But it can get boring eating the same stuff day in day out and there is no question that there is preparation time involved so what is needed is a quick, easy way to get the nutrients into our diets. And our kids are always looking for something different too!

Fruit smoothie recipes are an easy solution. Fruit smoothies are easy to make, don’t require exact ingredients and provide that meal in between when we get so hungry. Kids love the colors, the different flavors and can have a whole lot of fun helping to make them. Smoothies are a great way to get your kids to put on their chef hats and get excited about cooking!

Rather than snacking on high sodium, high fat snack treats, that only make us thirsty and unsatisfied, you can enjoy the richness of a fruit smoothie-changing the ingredients daily, and giving your body a wide variety of nutrients, vitamins and antioxidants. You can also add supplements to help your body fend off aging conditions. For example, adding a teaspoon of chia seedwhich is rich with Omega 3’s, is a definite metabolism booster with the vitamins, minerals and antioxidants your body needs for both healthy aging and healthy living.

Fruit nutrition is something to pay close attention to. Don’t just look at fruit as a way to lower calories to lose weight. Instead dig a little deeper and you will find that fruits offer some healthy snack recipes. For instance, did you know that bananas have a lot of B6, which helps to regulate blood glucose levels and a banana calms the stomach and with the help of the honey, builds up depleted blood sugar levels? In your favorite blender mix:

1 cup of frozen banana chunks
1 pear, cored and cut in chunks (you can keep the skin on)
4-6 ice cubes
1 Tbsp. Chia seed

Add the ice cubes one at a time until your smoothie is the consistency you like best. And, if you need (or want) to make your smoothie sweeter you can add a packet of artificial sweetener or a tablespoon of honey.

In your favorite blender mix:

  • 2½ cups fresh strawberries
  • 1 cup vanilla fat free yogurt
  • ½ cup orange juice w/ calcium
  • ½ cup skim milk (or soy)
  • 1 tbsp Chia seed

Add all ingredients to blender and blend until smooth.
